The Spanish judiciary on Thursday convicted the Brazilian player Dani Alves He was imprisoned for four and a half years for raping a young woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in 2022. The court stated in a statement that “the victim did not consent, and there is evidence, outside the scope of the plaintiff’s testimony, that allows rape to be considered proven.” Alves, who testified during his trial that sex with the young woman was consensual, can appeal the ruling.

The former Catalan team star (40 years old) was arrested and remained detained in one of the country's prisons. The public prosecutor accused Alves of forcing a woman to have sex and not using a condom, and demanded that he be imprisoned for nine years and that he pay compensation worth 150,000 euros ($163,215) to the victim.

The plaintiff, who testified behind a screen to protect her identity, said Elvis violently forced her to have sex in the nightclub's bathroom despite her pleading with him to let her leave, causing her “pain and terror,” prosecutors said.

A friend who was with her broke down in tears as she told the court how the victim was “crying non-stop” after leaving the bathroom, saying Alves had “hurt her”.

For his part, Alves, who was present throughout his three-day trial, testified that the sexual relationship he had with the woman was consensual and he denied hitting her and grabbing her hair. “I'm not that kind of man, I'm not violent,” he told the court after his defense lawyer asked him if he had forced her to have sex. He continued, “If she wanted to leave, she could have left, and she was not obligated to be there.”
