The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejects Russia's appeal to stop Olympia

On Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Russia’s appeal against the suspension imposed on it by the International Olympic Committee since October 2023, after Moscow recognized regional Olympic centers in Ukrainian regions occupied by it. Under the suspension, the Russian Olympic Committee will be deprived of any funding from the International Committee and will not be linked to the Olympic movement, but Russian athletes will be able to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the appeal filed by the Russian Olympic Committee against its suspension International Olympic Committee Since October 2023, after its recognition of regional Olympic centers in the Ukrainian regions it occupies (Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhya).

The International Olympic Committee considered that this step by Russia constituted a violation of the Olympic Charter because it violated the territorial unity of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.

The committee said in a statement: “The International Olympic Committee is pleased that the Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld the decision taken by its Executive Board on October 12, 2023 to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee.”

The statement added: “The decision of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee came after the unilateral decision taken by the Russian Olympic Committee on October 5, 2023 to include regional sports centers affiliated with the Ukrainian Olympic Committee to its membership, which constitutes a violation of the Olympic Charter.”

Russia rejects the CAS decision and considers it political

Under the suspension, the Russian Olympic Committee will be deprived of any funding from the International Olympic Committee and will not be associated with the Olympic Movement, but it does not affect any decision regarding the participation of Russian athletes in Paris Olympics Which will take place in the summer of 2024.

Russia rejected the International Olympic Committee’s decision, saying it was politically motivated.

Through the appeal, Russia requested the cancellation of the suspension and the re-recognition of all aspects of membership in the Russian Olympic Committee.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, said in a statement, “The body charged with examining this case rejected the appeal, upheld the disputed decision, and found that the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee” did not violate any principles in this regard.

After the Russian invasion, it was used Belarus As a starting point, Russian and Belarusian athletes were banned from competing in international championships.

Last year, the International Olympic Committee issued a preliminary set of recommendations to international sports federations and asked them to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions as individuals and without a flag or national anthem.

The International Olympic Committee said athletes should not be punished for the actions of their governments.
